BIO OF SENATOR LEROY R. JOHNSON
Leroy R.
Johnson is the owner of Leroy R. Johnson & Associates, P.C. and
he practices primarily in the areas of probate and estate,
criminal, domestic relations and personal injury. He has owned
and managed a successful law practice for forty-seven years.
Senator Johnson is a graduate of North Carolina School of Law
and earned both a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Morehouse College
and a Master of Arts Degree from Atlanta University. He was a
graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He was admitted to
practice law in the State of Georgia in 1959.
He was elected as the first Black Senator in Georgia since the
period of Reconstruction from the 38th District, Fulton County,
Georgia, 1962. In June 1996 the Senate of Georgia by Resolution,
authorized portrait of Senator Leroy R. Johnson to be hung in
the State Capital in recognition of his service to the State of
Georgia. Senator Johnson became the firsts Black elected
official to have his portrait hung in the Senate Chamber and the
first living person other than the Governor or Lieutenant
Governor to have his portrait hung in the State Capital.
Leroy R. Johnson was the man who obtained the boxing license
for, sponsored and promoted the fight that returned Muhammad Ali
to prominence in the boxing world. In 1970, after 67 other
cities denied the boxing immortal a license to fight, Atlanta
became the venue for the Ali-Jerry Quarry bout.
During the times when black lawyers and law students could not
find jobs in white firms Attorney Johnson opened the doors of
his practice to several lawyers who have gone on to become
Judges in Fulton County and the City of Atlanta – to name a few:
Marvin Arrington Sr., City Council Member and Fulton County
Superior Court Judge, Clarence Cooper, Judge 5th U.S. District
Court, Lynwood Jackson, City of Atlanta Traffic Court of Atlanta
Municipal Court; Andrew A. Mickles, City of Atlanta Municipal
Court Chief Judge; The Honorable J.L. Jordan and Judge Harris
Bostic also served as associates in the early years of his legal
practice.
Throughout the many years of the practice of law Attorney
Johnson has represented such famous entertainers such as: James
Brown, Soul Singer, Johnny Taylor, Rock and Roll and Blues
Singer, Otis Redding, Blues and Soul Singer, Hank Aaron,
Baseball homerun King; Tom Payne, basketball player for the
Atlanta Hawks; and Joel Williams, football player for the
Atlanta, Falcons.
Senator Johnson has been very involved in the community and is a
native of Atlanta, Georgia. He serves as co-counsel for the
Fulton County Development Authority and Chairman of the Butler
Street YMCA Board of Directors. In addition to the many
organizations that he has been an officer and/or member of, he
is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Ebenezer Baptist
Church where he has also been an active member for forty years.
In addition to Senator Johnson’s outstanding service and
involvement in the community, over the years he has received
many awards and/or appointments, and has been honored as follows
– to name a few: Appointed by President Lyndon Johnson as
Special Ambassador to represent the United States at the
Independence Ceremonies in Zanzibar, Africa, December 9, 1963;
One of ten citizens in the United States to receive the 1962
Russwurn Award made by the National Publishers Association;
Recipient of the 1963 Freedom Award by the NAACP; Recipient of
the NAACP Image Award in 1970; and the Recipient of the Herman
S. Prescott Award, sponsored by the National Boys and Girls
Clubs of America in 1971. Additionally, Senator Johnson received
the Benjamin E. Mayes “Bennie” Award presented to him by
Morehouse College at the Candle in the Park ceremony in February
of 2007.
He is married to Cleopatra Whittington Johnson, Ph.D., has one
son Michael V. Johnson, Ph.D., and three granddaughters, Melani,
Melissa and Michelle.
